Deadly Deception: The Yoga Ball Murder Case
In a chilling case that shocked Hong Kong in 2015, what seemed like a routine family day turned into a devastating tragedy that revealed a calculated murder plot involving everyday exercise equipment.
On the evening of Thursday, May 21, 2015, 16-year-old Lily walked into her home gym to find her father, Dr. Ka Kim Sun, performing cool-down exercises on a yoga ball. This was unusual, as her father would typically be in his study or at work during this time. When questioned about his presence, he casually explained that work at the hospital had been slow, allowing him to play tennis with friends before coming home.
The following day, Lily found herself studying at home instead of attending school. Despite her desire to spend her day off with friends, her father had insisted she stay home to study. Shortly after Dr. Sun left for work, Lily's mother, Wang Siu Fing, suggested they enjoy a mother-daughter shopping trip together. The two soon departed in Wang's yellow Mini Cooper.
Approximately two hours later, a jogger in their neighborhood noticed the yellow Mini Cooper parked on the side of the road with its engine still running. Inside, both Lily and her mother were found slumped over in their seats. Despite being rushed to the hospital, both mother and daughter were pronounced dead.
The Investigation Takes a Turn
For six months, police struggled to determine what had caused these mysterious deaths. Initial searches of the vehicle revealed nothing suspicious—just some personal belongings and what appeared to be ordinary exercise equipment in the trunk, including a deflated yoga ball.
When investigators revisited the case and took a closer look at the items in the car, the truth began to emerge. The seemingly innocent yoga ball turned out to be the murder weapon in an elaborate plot orchestrated by Dr. Sun himself.
A Calculated Crime
Two days before the tragedy, Dr. Sun had taken the yoga ball to his hospital workplace and filled it with carbon monoxide—an odorless, colorless, and deadly gas. His plan was to place the gas-filled ball in his wife's car and release the toxic contents, creating a lethal trap for his spouse.
Chillingly, Dr. Sun had not intended for his daughter to be a victim. His insistence that Lily stay home to study was actually an attempt to keep her away from the car. However, when Wang defied her husband's instructions and invited Lily along for their shopping trip, both mother and daughter were exposed to the deadly gas. After driving only a mile, they succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning.
Justice Served
Following the investigation, Dr. Ka Kim Sun was arrested and charged with two counts of murder. The court found him guilty, and he received a life sentence for his crimes. Despite the conviction, he has never revealed his motive for the calculated murder of his wife that also claimed his daughter's life.
This case serves as a sobering reminder that deadly threats can come from the most unexpected sources, even something as innocuous as exercise equipment in the hands of someone with lethal intentions.
