Creating a Joker-Themed Home Gym: The Arkham Asylum Transformation

Converting an unused storage room into a personalized workout space can dramatically improve your home fitness experience. One creative enthusiast recently transformed a basic white-walled storage area into an impressive Joker-themed gym called “The Asylum.” This unique project combines practical fitness functionality with themed aesthetics that make working out at home more enjoyable.

Starting with the Basics: Paint and Lighting

The project began with the fundamentals of any room renovation. The previously white-walled storage area with brick walls, PVC ceiling, and dusty old carpet was reimagined as a sleek black space. The walls were painted with two coats of all-coat exterior satin paint (priced at approximately $115 for five liters), which offered the advantage of requiring no priming or sanding and adhered well to plastic surfaces. The brick wall received Layland masonry paint from B&M for a consistent dark theme throughout.

For lighting, the standard GU10 spotlights were replaced with Govee smart bulbs, complementing Phillips Hue fixtures used in other areas of the house. This smart lighting setup allows for customizable ambiance during workouts.

Flooring: The Foundation of Any Good Gym

Perhaps the most challenging aspect of the project was installing the rubber gym flooring. Sourced from Equipped Gym at a cost of approximately $800, the black rubber floor tiles provided a durable surface ideal for heavy equipment and intense workouts. However, installation proved difficult due to uneven surfaces in the original floor, causing some lifting at the corners of tiles.

For a transition area between the main gym space and storage section, the builder used offcuts from the rubber tiles (cut to 30cm widths) to create a border, then filled the center with affordable carpet tiles from B&M at just $2 each—a budget-friendly solution that actually enhanced the overall appearance.

Joker-Themed Elements

The standout feature of this gym is its Joker-inspired theme:

  • The entrance door was decorated with an asylum-style sticker purchased online for about $16, creating an immediate thematic impact
  • A custom “Joker Cade” arcade machine built during lockdown adds entertainment value
  • A collection of Joker figures and toys amassed over 35 years adds authentic character
  • A mirror framed with hand-painted and decal “Ha Ha Ha” lettering reinforces the Joker aesthetic

Smart Storage Solutions

To conceal the existing storage area, a simple stud wall frame was constructed, incorporating a free door found on Facebook Marketplace. The door was sanded and painted to match the rest of the space, creating a seamless look while maintaining access to stored items.

Equipment Selection

The gym features a thoughtful selection of equipment including:

  • A multi-functional weight bench
  • Dumbbells (2.5, 5, and 10 pound sets to start)
  • A neighbor's bicycle (stored as a space-saving courtesy)
  • Various weight plates and bars

This transformation shows how a dedicated home gym doesn't require massive space or budget—just creativity and strategic planning. The themed elements make it a space that's not just functional but personally motivating, turning what could be a mundane workout area into an environment that inspires consistent training.

Whether you're considering a full theme like this Joker-inspired gym or just looking to optimize your workout space, focusing on quality flooring, proper lighting, and personalized touches can make all the difference in creating a home gym you'll actually want to use.
