Full Written Review:
Despite having more than 80% 4-star ratings and thousands of positive reviews, the Hessaire portable evaporative cooler is not effective enough to cool your garage gym and turn it into a comfortable workout space.
The reviews are definitely not fake but this portable swamp cooler isn't good enough for humid environments and for garages and places that get extremely hot during summer.
Read on to find out what exactly swamp coolers are, why they are so popular, and why this one isn't worth buying.
Also, check out the other options that you might want to try.
What is a swamp cooler?
Also known as evaporative coolers and desert coolers, these machines cool the outdoor air by passing it through the water-saturated pads.
The cool air is then pushed into the room, making the warmer air escape through the window or door.
This video will help you understand the process better.
Here are a few things that you need to know about swamp coolers:
- You have to leave a window or a door open either fully or partially to let the warm indoor air escape.
- Air conditioners recirculate the same air. But swamp coolers absorb fresh outdoor air, cool it, and then disperse it into the room. In short, they provide you with fresh air. If you live in a heavily polluted area, you wouldn't probably want this.
- Swamp coolers are inexpensive. Even if you go for the best portable evaporative cooler it will still cost you half the price of an air conditioner.
- As obvious, desert coolers consume less electricity.
- They require much more maintenance than air conditioners. You have to regularly remove the build-up or else they will start harboring mold and mildew.
- They require a constant supply of water. Some inexpensive models ask you to fill water manually but the modern ones such as the Hessaire 2,200 cfm 2-speed portable evaporative cooler can be connected to household hose for continuous filling.
Please note: If you have come across any DIY swamp cooler tutorial, we urge you not to try them.
They might work but it’s not worth the risk and definitely not worth a trip to a hardware store. Swamp coolers are anyway inexpensive, so you should buy one instead.
Hessaire Portable Evaporative Cooler Review
It measures 24 x 16 x 38 inches and weighs 39 Pounds. The body is made of roto-plastic, which is the standard material used for swamp coolers. The plastic seems to be thick and strong but you have to store it indoors when not in use or else it will crack. Metal evaporative coolers are available too but don’t buy them. They start rusting sooner than expected. Plus, they are too heavy and not very portable.
We haven’t used it a lot because it didn’t work for us but numerous buyers have stated that the Hessaire swamp cooler is quite durable. The pump might fail after 2-3 seasons but swamp cooler pumps are cheap and easily available.
Just like other best swamp coolers, this one comes fully assembled. You only have to add the four wheels to the base. Two of them have locks to prevent the cooler from moving around when in use.
This swamp cooler consumes 250 wattage of electricity and can be used to cool a 950 square feet area. It is easy to operate with just three buttons to control the swing and the airflow. You can connect it to the household hose using the float adapter that comes with this unit or you may choose to fill it manually. It can hold 10.3 gallons of water, which could last up to 4 hours.
We love that it comes with an automatic overheat protection feature and it also has ETL safety certification. It is definitely one of the best evaporative air coolers one could buy for summers.
Is Hessaire 2,200 cfm 2-speed portable evaporative cooler effective?
We have already mentioned at the beginning of the article and in the video above that this portable evaporative cooler didn't even help bring down the temperature of our garage by 2 degrees. Plus, it did nothing to get rid of the humidity. Rather, we felt like it made the environment more humid and almost unsuitable to exercise. We literally felt like we were in a shower.
That is not the kind of environment where anybody would like to exercise. Honestly, heat is not a major issue; humidity is.
Sweaty hands can affect your grip. The sweat dripping down from your body can make your garage surface slippery. Plus, excessive sweating can affect your performance.
Further, humidity can make your home gym equipment get rusted, especially barbells. If yours is already rusted, here is how you can make it look like new.
The best evaporative air cooler should be the one that helps you deal with both the heat and humidity. Unfortunately, Hessaire portable evaporative cooler doesn't do that nor does any other swamp cooler.
After evaluating thousands of portable evaporative cooler reviews, we have learned that these machines are not effective for humid environments. Even if you buy the best evaporative cooler, it will provide you relief from heat only when you use it in dry climates and the Department of Energy confirms it too.
So, we don’t know how much you should trust the below image from HESSAIRE.
As we have mentioned at the beginning of this article, Hessaire swamp Cooler has received a lot of positive reviews from thousands of buyers. It is probably one of the best portable evaporative coolers.
But, it didn't work for us, which is why we have rated it poorly. The manufacturer should have mentioned that it is not suitable for humid climates. If this was mentioned in the product description, we wouldn't have bought it. It would have saved our time and effort.
Plus, it literally killed our excitement!
We are sure other buyers might have purchased it from Home Depot or other websites and may have regretted the purchase.
Hessaire portable evaporative cooler alternatives
We know you won't like it but air conditioners are the most reliable and effective way to maintain the temperature of your garage gym.
Worried about the electricity bill?
Who wouldn't, especially at this time when many of us have lost their jobs or got a pay cut due to the bad economy and pandemic? Thankfully, there is a way that can help you minimize your electricity consumption.
The Department of Energy recommends that you can use an air conditioner and dehumidifier together to cool off the area quickly. The dehumidifier will remove the humidity from the air and bring down the temperature by a few degrees. And then the air conditioner will work on to further bring down the temperature to the level you want.
To be honest, we haven't tried it but we will soon be experimenting with some of these top-rated products.
The portable air conditioners that we may buy soon are:
Some of the top-rated dehumidifiers that we have on our buying list are:
- Yaufey 1750 Sq. Ft Dehumidifiers for Home and Basements
- Waykar 2000 Sq. Ft Dehumidifier for Home and Basements
- Vacplus 30 Pints 1,500 Sq. Ft. Dehumidifier
The Department of Energy also states that you can combine swamp coolers and dehumidifiers. So, maybe you can try using the Hessaire portable evaporative cooler with any of the humidifiers listed above and see how well they work. If they do, do tell us.
