Marcy Smith Cage Machine Review

In our article on ‘What is the best Smith machine for home gym’, we have clearly explained why we are not fond of these huge squat rack-like structures.

Smith machines make you become dependent on them, thereby weakening your body’s own balancing muscles and reflexes. But, they are still a good option for people who do not have enough flexibility and balance to train safely with free weights. They are also good for people who want to train really heavy at home without having a spotter to rescue them during accidents.

If you are one of those people who would rather have a smith machine in your home gym for whatever reason it is, we have already reviewed a few of them in our article on ‘What is the best smith machine for home gym’. In that article, we have included Marcy PRO smith machine SM-4903 because it is a popular low-cost option.

We recently got a chance to try the Marcy Smith Cage SM-4008, which is another popular product from the same manufacturer. Just like SM-4903, it is also an all-in-one machine that has 8 different workout stations.

The manufacturer claims that it is probably the only machine that you would need to target all major muscle groups of your body. But, we are not very impressed with its build quality. In this article, we will provide you with a detailed review of the Marcy Smith Cage Machine SM-4008 so you can decide if that’s the one that best suits your needs.

Quick Review Summary

Marcy SM-4008 Smith machine comes with a pullup bar, a cable pulley system, a free weight training area with J-hooks, a leg developer, a weight bench, and various other accessories and workout stations that you can use to exercise almost all muscle groups of your body. The machine is rated for just 300lbs, making it suitable for beginners and casual training sessions. However, numerous buyers have mentioned that the plastic parts used for holding the Olympic sleeves are not going to last long enough. Plus, some of them have also stated that the barbell is of cheap quality and not reliable for more than 100lbs of weight. Buy only if you want to use it twice or thrice a week

Pros

Please note- Just like most smith machines that we have come across, the Marcy Smith cage SM-4008 doesn’t come with any weight plates or a free barbell. You have to use your own Olympic plates. If you don’t have them, we highly recommend Fringe Sport Black Bumper Plates or any of the best bumper plates that we have selected for home gym setups.

If you want to train with a free barbell instead of the one attached to the smith machine, you will have to buy that too. We have already created curated lists of Best Affordable Olympic Barbells, Best Mid Range $200-500 Olympic Barbells, and Best High-End ($500+) Olympic Barbells for you.

It is one of the most affordable all-in-one smith machine

Smith machines are expensive. Even decent quality products such as the Valor Fitness BE-11 Smith Machine could cost more than $1000 and they are very basic products with no additional accessories. If you want a full-fledged smith machine, you will have to shell out at least $2500.

Beginners and casual trainers might not feel confident enough to spend that much money. Marcy has quite a few options for them, including this SM-4008 smith cage. As mentioned above, it comes with pulley systems, leg developer, and almost everything that you can only get with high-end models. It is a complete home gym and not just a smith machine

Marcy Smith Cage SM-4008 machine also comes with j-hooks, so if you want to squat or bench press without using the support from the smith machine, you can still use it.

Marcy Smith cage machine works as expected

Buyers of Marcy smith cages have agreed that they are wide and stable, so even if you are training fast, you don’t have to worry about tipping or wobbling issues. The cables used for the pulley systems are made of aircraft-grade steel for extra durability. Almost every part of it is thoughtfully designed to cater to most of your workout needs.

Some buyers have complained that the lineage system uses bushings instead of bearings and that's why it isn’t absolutely smooth. Well, what more can you expect from a $1000 machine!

Whatever it is, the machine works just fine for its price but there are some severe issues that you may not be fine with. We are listing them below.

The weight pegs and leg developer have plastic parts that won’t last long if used roughly

Leg developer is still understandable but using plastic for weight pegs is a serious flaw. We don’t know why Marcy decided to use plastic for holding 45lbs plates.

The weight pegs or holders may not last beyond 6 months or a year. That’s just unacceptable.

The pull up bar can bend even with moderate weight

A buyer has shared the above image on Amazon. As you can see, the bar bent even when it was holding just 120lbs weight.

Many buyers have also stated that the bar has almost non-existent knurl marks, which makes it totally non-grippy. Well, this is a smith machine so you don’t have to worry about the bar slipping and falling on your feet but why would anyone want a barbell without any knurl marks!

You will also be disappointed to know that the barbell in the smith system weighs just 15 lbs, so most likely, it is a hollow barbell, not a solid one. You can’t really trust it to hold 300lbs.

If you can assemble it in one go, we would consider you lucky

buyer's review on complex assembly instructions

Most buyers have spent around 5-9 hours putting it together. The instructions are almost useless and the diagrams are also not easy to understand. Look at the image above where a buyer has explained how he spent 9 hours assembling it even though he has a Ph.D. in STEMS.

You are most likely going to get stuck while adding the pulley system.

We are giving this a rating of 3.5 out of 5.0.

Wrap Up

The Marcy Smith Cage SM-4008 machine is not really worth buying unless you want to use it casually, maybe twice or thrice a week. Marcy PRO smith machine SM-4903 is a better alternative.
