Bowflex Xtreme 2 SE Home Gym Review

All-in-one workout machines are great options for people who have a very limited workout space for setting up their home gym. These machines are designed to help you target almost all major muscle groups of the body. They are also cheaper than setting up a full-fledged home gym including weights, LAT machines, rowing machines, spin bikes, barbells, etc.

All-in-one home gyms may not be enough for athletes and bodybuilders but they are challenging enough for beginners and people who are quite active and need something to maintain themselves.

We had recently reviewed Total Gym XLS, which is heavily endorsed by Chuck Norris and Christie Brinkley. It works great for beginners and casual trainers but it doesn’t provide enough resistance to people who are already in good shape. That’s where this Bowflex Xtreme 2 home gym machine comes in.

Total Gym XLS that uses bodyweight resistance, which is just enough for people who are getting started or those who do not have any major fitness goals. Bowflex Xceed, however, uses power rod resistance technology that provides 210lbs of resistance, which can be upgraded to 310lbs or 410lbs. Now, 410lbs is more than enough for most of us.

If you have been thinking of buying the Bowflex Xtreme 2 home gym but not feeling confident enough to place your order due to the high price tag, this detailed review will help you make an informed decision, whatsoever it is.

Power rod technology provides ultra-smooth resistance that does not strain your joints

The above video will help you understand how and why power rod resistance is better for your joints than free weights. The low impact resistance training makes this machine suitable for people recovering from injuries and those who are suffering from degenerative diseases.

The power rods used in Bowflex Xtreme 2 SE home gyms are made of high quality composite material, which makes them highly durable. The manufacturer is so confident about their durability that it has offered lifetime warranty on them. As of now, Bowflex is the only company that uses this technology.

Basically, power rods are stretchy rods that work like a bow. The arch that you make by pulling this rod provides resistance and tension. So, the deeper arch you make, the more resistance you will get. If you need more resistance, you need to add (and pull) more rods.

The power rods do not really last a lifetime

Over time, they will lose their elasticity, resistance, and tension. They may not snap or break but they won’t be as effective as they are when they are new

Although Bowflex offers a lifetime warranty on the power rods, it does not cover normal wear and tear. This means, you will have to buy your own rods and replace them.

But, don’t worry; you won’t have to replace them so soon. For casual trainers, the power rods of Bowflex Xtreme 2 home gym could last up to 5 years. With a more rigorous use, they can still last for 2-3 years, which is more than what we had expected.

The no-change cable pulley system saves time and hassles

how the power rods bend while exercising

In other home gym machines, you will have to adjust the pulleys and even re-route the cables to do different sets of exercises. This could take a couple of minutes, which could slow down your heart heat and pace. Plus, if you are in a hurry, you might not really want to make that extra effort.

Bowflex Xceed home gyms feature a revolutionary no-change pulley system, which basically means it has a few extra pulleys and cables. So, instead of repositioning the existing ones, you can use different pulleys and cables, thereby saving your time.

You will still have to make some minor adjustments but that won’t take more than a few seconds. This makes Bowflex Xtreme 2 home gym a perfect equipment for people who love circuit training.

Bowflex Xtreme 2 SE is a highly versatile machine

It comes with hand grips, ankle cuffs, angled LAT bar, squat bar, ab harness, and leg developer. With the help of all these attachments, you can perform about 70 different exercises, targeting almost all muscle groups of your body.

Now, you might wonder if it’s actually possible to do 70 exercises. A lot of manufacturers make such high claims but it is not practically possible to do all those exercises.

Bowflex, however, has backed up its claim by creating an owners’ manual that illustrates 73 different types of workouts. Along with the exercises, it also lists an explanation of each of them and some tips on how you can get max benefits from it.

The company also has several YouTubes videos that can help you maximize your performance. You won’t have to do much guesswork.

Bowflex Xceed may not be suitable for shorter people

It is a standard-sized machine, so if you are too short or too tall, you will have to compromise with your comfort or form. People shorter than 5.4’ might have to hyper-extend their muscles to grab the handles, which could be uncomfortable for some exercises. People taller than 6.2” may not be able to get a full range of motion.

Well, that’s a standard problem with all home gyms and there is nothing you can do about it. Some machines may have adjustable seats to provide a bit of flexibility but you will still have to compromise.

It is expensive but that’s a common issue with all Bowflex equipment

Total Gym XLS costs about $500 whereas the Bowflex Xtreme home gym costs triple its price. But, Bowflex equipment are always expensive and there is nothing you can do about it except looking for more affordable products.

For example; the Bowflex 1090 Dumbbells costs approximately $450 whereas FLYBIRD Adjustable Dumbbells cost around $110. That’s a significant difference and both of them are equally good. Just that Bowflex uses better quality materials, a better design, and up-to-date technology.
