Planning to buy a squat rack but not sure how much you may have to spend? Scared to buy the low-cost squat racks because they wobble a lot? Wondering if you necessarily have to buy the most expensive power cage that you can afford?

Don’t worry; this article will help you understand how much money is worth spending on a squat rack that serves your purpose. I will brief you about the build quality of the squat racks in various price ranges, the features that you can expect from them, and the purpose they serve. I will also share some of my top recommendations so you don’t have to brainstorm a lot.

To begin with, let me first briefly tell you about the types of squat racks you can buy, just in case you don’t already know.

Squat rack/power cage vs half rack vs independent squat stands vs wall-mounted squat racks

types of squat racks

As you can see in the image above, squat racks are also known as power cages. They have four posts and offer maximum stability. You can use them for all types of crossfit workouts.

Half racks have two posts and are mostly meant for benching and squatting workouts.

Independent squat stands are for compact spaces and should be used for benching and squatting only if you do not have space for a squat rack/half rack.

Wall-mounted foldable squat racks are pretty expensive and heavy-duty products meant for garages.

A low cost power cage such as the Hulkfit Power Cage can cost you a minimum $200- $250.

But, do not expect too much from it.

Low cost squat racks are made of 14 gauge steel, which is not as strong as 12 gauge or 11 gauge steel used for the good quality one. Plus, such racks are made of 2” x 2” steel tubing, which isn’t thick enough to hold a lot of weight. They are wobbly and they often lack proper finish and welding.
But, if you are a beginner or a recreational lifter on a budget, an affordable squat rack is still a better (and safer) option than not using a squat rack at all. Some good quality ones such as the Titan T-2 Series Power Racks are in fact good enough for even intermediate-level trainers.

To buy a mid-range power cage, be prepared to spend at least $450-$600.

REP Fitness power cage

Over the last few years, I have tested and reviewed numerous mid-range squat racks because that's what most people buy. The mid-range squat racks are made of 2.5” X 2.5” or 3” X 3” frame which is usually made of 12 gauge steel. These racks are usually sold by renowned brands, so their build quality is exceptionally good. They do not wobble a lot and some of them can be customized to suit your need or available space.

Talking about the price; the Titan Fitness T3 series racks are the least expensive one costing around $450. You can pay more and get it customized. REP Fitness too has some of the best options for you. The Rep Fitness PR-1100 Squat Rack is also quite affordable but if you can spend more, the Rep Fitness PR-4000 Power Rack is a product that you will probably never be able to outgrow. Rogue R series racks are also meant for intermediate to advanced trainers but they could cost you around $600-$800 depending on the model you choose.

💡 Quick Tip: If you are looking for a squat rack, you probably also want to buy a barbell to go with it. I highly recommend REP Fitness Excalibur bar.

Expensive squat racks meant for advanced trainers, athletes, and powerlifters can cost you more than $600.

Rogue squat rack

Some of them cost more than $1000.

They are also made of 3” X 3” 11 gauge uprights and come with thick 1” hardware that can handle an enormous amount of weight. They are fully customizable and can take as many accessories as you want. These high-end squat racks are beasts. But, unless you are lifting a crazy amount of weight, you don’t need such heavy-duty racks.

In case you are wondering what options you have; the most affordable ones are Titan Fitness X-3 Series racks. And then you have the Rep Fitness PR-5000 Power Cage, which is voted as 2022 favorite rack on reddit r/homegym. Rogue RM Series Monster Racks are the top-of-the-line products and can be trusted with anything.

Average cost of a half rack

Sunny health & fitness half rack

A half rack could cost you at least $200 but such low-cost products are only meant for beginners and those who do not train heavy. Sunny Health & Fitness SF-XF9931 is one such example.

But, don’t worry. Even if your budget is less than $300, you can still but a good quality, durable, and stable half rack such as the Sunny Health & Fitness SF-BH6802 half rack, Titan T3 Series half rack, Fitness Reality Multi-Function Half Rack, and Fitness Gear Pro Half Rack

Advanced trainers and athletes should, however, go with better quality products that could cost around $400. Check out Rogue Fitness SML (Monster Light) Series Half Racks and Rep Fitness SR 4000 Rack for example.

They are quite expensive and you don’t have too many options to choose from.

I have already reviewed and compiled a list of best folding squat racks. As you can guess from my list, usually most foldable squat racks are designed for intermediate to advanced trainers and you can expect to spend at least $400 for the cheapest one except for the Ethos folding power rack. The ones from Titan and REP could cost you around $500 to $600 whereas those from Rogue are sold for over $600.

Average cost for Independent stands

squat stand

They are not an alternative to squat racks or power cages but having independent squat stands is still better than lifting the barbell directly from the floor.

You can buy a decent pair of squat stands such as the Titan T-3 Series Independent Squat Stand for around $350. High-end ones such as the Rogue S-4 Squat Stand are also sold around $400. Cheaper options are available too. Check out my list of best independent squat stands to get recommendations for products that are available for less than $300.
