What is a Trap Bar?

A trap bar is also called a hex bar sometimes when people are in a witchy mood, and also because it is shaped like a hexagon. We will be covering the best trap bars of 2019 that come in all shapes and sizes, this means some will be hexagonal in shape while some have drastic designs (they are all awesome).

Long story short, a trap bar is a specially designed barbell that allows you to perform deadlifts in a very unique way. It basically alters the way you do deadlifts drastically and hence has a unique name associated with it.

What Are the Benefits of Using a Trap Bar Over a Conventional Barbell?

There are quite a few benefits of using a trap bar over a conventional barbell, the biggest one is avoiding lower back injuries while deadlifting. Conventional barbells put a significant amount of stress on your lower back and if you’re not careful, may cause injuries as well. A trap bar reduces the strain you put on your lower back plus avoiding injuries during heavy weight lifts.

Additionally, a trap bar allows you to perform a variety of different exercises that are either hard to pull on a conventional barbell or downright impossible. You can easily train your legs, glutes, hamstrings, and core with a good quality trap bar. You can also perform power training as the design makes it easier for you to jump. From neutral shoulder shrugs too farmer walks, a trap bar allows you to pull these moves off without the fear of injuries.

How we Evaluated the Trap Bars in our Review

Our review process starts with ample research. We track and narrow down a list of potential great products and then consult forums and reviews to see how well they are received by the consumers. Then, we simply order a lot of them. For this review alone we’ve ordered 20 different trap bars from various manufacturers.

After we received the products, we start using them ourselves. We evaluated dimensions to weight and sleeve length to handle the distance, and determined the 11 best trap bars of 2019. Of course, our review process is not scientific by any means and we go by our own personal experience and instinct. However, our evaluation combined with the market reaction, allows us to make genuinely beneficial recommendations.

#1 – HulkFit Olympic 2-Inch Hex Weight Lifting Trap Bar

HulkFit Olympic 2-Inch Hex Weight Lifting Trap Bar

HulkFit Olympic 2-Inch Hex Weight Lifting Trap Bar

Weight Capacity lbs : 1000

The HulkFit Olympic Hex Trap Bar marries the perfect balance between affordability and quality, this is why we are placing it on the top place on our best tap bars in 2019 list. The first thing you’ll notice about this trap bar is the quality, the hex-shaped bar is made out of solid heavy-duty steel. The best part? The steel is not hallowed and this makes the HulkFit Olympic Hex Trap Bar capable of withstanding 1000 pounds. If you are looking for a great trap bar in 2019 that will last years to come, the HulkFit Olympic Hex Trap Bar is one of the best choices in the market.

The HulkFit Olympic Hex Trap Bar comes in two styles as well, regular and open back. There are different benefits of using either one of those, the regular one feels a bit secure but the open back one is easier to get into and use. The HulkFit Olympic Hex Trap Bar also has good length sleeves as well so you can easily load more weights on it and expand your capabilities. We also love the multiple knurling positions, regular as well as raised handles and the quality of the overall product. The trap bar comes in either chrome or black colors as well, giving you more options. Overall, the HulkFit Olympic Hex Trap Bar is one of the best and solidly made trap bars that weigh 45 pounds itself. For the price, it is a great purchase.

Pros:

  • The bar has a standard 2” inch diameter
  • It is made out of solid steel
  • The knurling design makes lifting easier
  • Available in two different designs

Cons:

  • Might not be comfortable for people over 6.2ft

Summary: A solid chunk of equipment

#2 – ROGUE TB-2 TRAP BAR

ROGUE TB-2 TRAP BAR

ROGUE TB-2 TRAP BAR

Weight Capacity lbs : Not Listed

Rogue makes some of the best gym equipment I’ve ever used and the Rogue TB-2 Trap Bar is no exception either. The bar is made extremely well and the quality is very apparent when you first see the Rogue TB-2 Trap Bar. This trap bar also comes in a hexagonal design and is suited for almost everyone. The design is closed back and there are two handles available for a proper grip. I personally flip the trap bars over so the extended handle grip is facing downwards while doing squats, which makes it a lot more comfortable.

The Rogue TB-2 Trap Bar is made in the USA and has a welded frame made out of 1.5” square-shaped steel tubing. Don’t worry, the 16-inch loading sleeve is still around so you can stack it up with a lot of weight. The distance between the two handles is 25 inches which are more than enough for most folks, however, if you are already bulky and wide, this might be a tight fit. The Rogue TB-2 Trap Bar also weighs around 66 pounds without any weights stacked so you should also keep that into consideration. The Rogue TB-2 Trap Bar is a superbly made trap bar that will last you a long time without any problems. If you are looking for a trap bar that is made by a reputable brand in the USA, the Rogue TB-2 Trap Bar is the one for you.

Pros:

  • Square steel pipes look awesome
  • The handles are knurled for easier grip
  • The trap bar is made in the USA
  • The sleeve length is great

Cons:

  • The sleeve diameter is slightly smaller than 2” coming at 1.92”

Summary: Go reliably rogue

#3 – XMark Fitness Chrome Olympic Deadlift

XMark Fitness Chrome Olympic Deadlift

XMark Fitness Chrome Olympic Deadlift

Weight Capacity lbs : 400

If you are in the market for a good quality hex bar, then the XMark Fitness XM- 3686 Hex Bar is one of the best options available. It is made out of solid steel and comes with a shiny polished look. The XMark Fitness XM- 3686 Hex Bar follows a similar design that many other trap bars have, which is not a bad thing to be fair. Why change the winning formula when it is working so well right? The design as the name suggests is hexagonal and you need to step into it before working out.

I personally really love the raised handles of the XMark Fitness XM- 3686 Hex Bar, it makes it so much better to use in various different exercises. They are also knurled so the grip is always reliable. The standard handle also follows the same style. The easy pick up from the ground means less strain on your back and body, which can lead to a healthy and safe workout. The only downside of the XMark Fitness XM- 3686 Hex Bar is the low weight limit of 400 pounds, which may not be enough for advanced users. However, it is perfectly fine for most and with its sleeves that can carry 5 to 6 plates, it is more than enough.

Pros:

  • Standard, tried and tested design
  • The shiny chrome finish catches the eyes
  • Raised handles are great for pickups
  • The bar is a bit lighter yet still made of steel

Cons:

  • The weight limit is 400 pounds

Summary: Sleek and stylish hexagonal trap bar

#4 – THE TRAP BAR

THE TRAP BAR

THE TRAP BAR

Weight Capacity lbs : 1200

The Kabuki Strength Trap Bar is not an affordable trap bar that is for sure. Coming at $650, it is one of the expensive options on the best trap bars in the 2019 list but it had to be included simply because of its unique design and superb build quality. The design is what makes the Kabuki Strength Trap Bar so good, it features a unique arrangement where you can simply rotate the bar and place it vertically, you have to see the pictures to get the idea, and words cannot properly describe how cool it is. There are even small feet built in the frame so the Kabuki Strength Trap Bar stands stable.

If people are paying a premium price for your product, you have to make sure they are getting some good extras as well. The Kabuki Strength Trap Bar does exactly that by including two different grips, I would’ve loved to see the thicker one included in the package as well (it is sold separately). The open design of the Kabuki Strength Trap Bar makes it easier to use, despite having that design, the overall balance is kept fine. The open design also opens up several new exercising options like lunges, loaded carries and split squats.

Pros:

  • A unique design that works great
  • Build quality is exceptionally good
  • The open design allows for more exercises
  • Comes with two different grips

Cons:

  • The price might be an issue for some

Summary: A premium and unique option that delivers

Ever wonder how it would feel to lift a flying saucer from the inside? The XMark Commercial Trap Bar may not be an alien ship but it does come close. The first thing you’ll notice about the XMark Commercial Trap Bar is the design, it is not even hexagonal anymore, and it is octagonal! It’s something straight out of Star Wars and it’s awesome. The handles are positioned uniquely as well, the revolving grip handles give you the freedom to select between 30 mm, 38 mm or 45 mm grips. I really like the elevated plate sleeve that makes it easier to load and unload weights.

The Rogue TB-1 Trap Bar 2.0 keeps things simple, it has the same design as the TB-2 we have on the top spot in this list however it removes one key feature; the handles. The sleeve is 16 inches long and you can stack a lot of weight on it. The handles are spaced 25 inches apart so it has some room inside it. #11 – REP Trap Bar

REP Trap Bar

REP Trap Bar

Weight Capacity lbs : 500

REP Trap bar is a bit thin but it works just the same. It also follows the same design we’ve seen in other trap bars on the list and that isn’t a bad thing at all. The chrome-finished steel body looks clean and functional. I like how long the sleeves are so you can easily stack 4-6 plates on it without any trouble. There are two handles on the REP Trap Bar and both of them have knurled grips. The only reason why this is so low on the list is the availability, it is usually out of stock and you have to wait for restocking.

Pros:

  • Solid steel body
  • Standard design that works
  • Long sleeves for more weights
  • Handles are knurled

Cons:

  • The availability is an issue
